At ILS, winter is the season of cozy sweaters, hot cocoa, and… showtime! As our students prepare for winter showcases and recitals, it’s an exciting opportunity for children to build confidence, show off their hard work, and have fun in the spotlight. Here are some tips to help your child feel prepared and overcome performance jitters:
1. Practice Makes Perfect
Encourage your child to practice regularly but in short, manageable sessions. If you need scripts, dance videos or other rehearsing materials reach out to your child’s teacher or site supervisor. This helps them build confidence in their performance without feeling overwhelmed. Make practice time fun by cheering them on or joining in!
2. Set the Stage at Home
Help your child feel comfortable performing by creating a mini “stage” at home. Invite family members or even stuffed animals to be their audience. Practicing in front of others builds confidence for the big day.
3. Celebrate Effort Over Perfection
It’s natural to feel nervous about performing, but remind your child that it’s all about having fun and doing their best. Celebrate their effort and progress to ease any pressure they might feel.
4. Dress Rehearsal Ready
Ensure your child’s outfit and props are ready ahead of time. Practice in costume if possible to make them feel fully prepared.
5. Encourage Positive Self-Talk
Help your child develop a “can-do” attitude by teaching them to say things like, “I’ve got this!” or “I’m ready to shine!” A little positivity goes a long way.
6. Cheer Them On
On recital day, be your child’s biggest fan. A warm smile or a thumbs-up from the audience can mean the world to your young performer.
With your encouragement and these simple steps, your child will feel confident, prepared, and ready to take the stage with pride. Let’s make this winter’s showcase a memorable one!
